Alcohol
The attitude of
the United States is so wrong on this point. European countries have so many
less problems with alcohol because their attitude is different. Instead of
making it something strange, mysterious, and "adult-only", the Europeans have
made alcohol a way of life. Adults drink it, kids get to have small amounts,
and it's a regular in meals and celebrations. The children learn from early on
the effects of it, how to treat it with respect, and how to enjoy it. I think
we could learn a lot from those attitudes. My children will grow up learning
not to fear alcohol but respect it for what it is.
Obviously, alcoholism
is a big problem and I'm all about the efforts to curtail it, but I think an
attitude shift would do a lot for that as well. Out of all the drugs you could
possibly ingest, alcohol is by far one of the safest due to the fact that it
enters, has effects, and leaves after a time without any major problems. As
long as you drink responsibly, everything's good. Don't get behind the wheel of
that car. I know you're ok, but what if you're not? It's not worth having some
henious act on your shoulders for the rest of your life, really.
